We hear that a lot from our clients who want their website to be #1 on Google, yahoo or any other search engine result. Sadly, it’s not that easy. Search engines list and rank sites based on many factors, some of which deal directly with how long your site has been around and how many people link from their website to yours. Both of these things take time and that is something the search engines hold in high regard.

However you are not without options, search engine marketing is the key. Paying for search engine placement is one way you can get immediate traffic to your website. These ads typically run at the top and/or on the right side (look at Google, for example) of search results. You may have not noticed these areas before or may have taken them for granted as part of the standard search results but there is a lot of work that goes in to these ads.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is the science (and sometimes art) of bidding on keywords (words that your target audience would use to search for your industry or product) to get your ad listed on search engine results. These ads are most often pay per click (you only pay when someone actually clicks on the ad) and you pay a CPC (cost per click) that can range from a quarter to several dollars depending on the keyword.

Having a talented and educated partner help you with your search engine marketing campaign is key. Look for companies who are affiliated with the search engines they are listing you on and who have experience in the field.
